2) MEMBERSHIP OF BCURA, THE COUNCIL AND THE INDUSTRIAL PANEL
Membership of BCURA and the Industrial Panel is open to all companies and organisations with interests in the promotion of coal utilisation research at UK Universities and other research institutions. At the present time, a wide range of organisations are Members of BCURA and include the main UK utilities (E.ON plc, RWEnpower plc, EDF Energy plc., Scottish and Southern Energy plc, Scottish Power plc., British Energy plc., Drax Power Ltd., International Power plc.), the main UK steel company (Corus UK Ltd.), one of the main producers of smokeless fuels (CPL Industries Ltd), and two major UK equipment manufacturers (Doosan-Babcock Energy Ltd. and Alstom Power Ltd.), an industrial coal user (British Sugar plc.), an international coal producer (Rio Tinto), and the Electric Power Research Institute, (EPRI) of the USA, as well as some other organisations and individuals.
BCURA is presided over and governed by the Council which has a similar function to the Board of Directors of a Company. The Council consists of persons who are elected to Council and who serve on an individual basis, (rather than as representatives of the Member organisations), although Council Members are usually elected from the organisations of the Members of BCURA. In addition, Council Meetings are attended by the BCURA Company Secretary, Mr.J.D.Gardner, the BCURA Technical Officer, Dr.D.J.A.McCaffrey and Mr.N.Aluko, representing the Department of Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform, (DBERR). Industrial Panel Meetings are also attended by a representative of the BCURA Council, currently Prof.J.S.Harrison and the BCURA Technical Officer who acts as the Industrial Panel Co-ordinator. Members of the BCURA Research Panel also attend the annual meeting of the BCURA Industrial Panel for the selection of proposals to be recommended to Council for funding. The administrative, financial and technical services are provided to BCURA and managed by the BCURA Company Secretary and the Technical Officer.
